Think of all the fun he can have! Roald Dahl should have turned the narrator back into a human at the end of the book. Our narrator's life is way better as a mouse. Were you surprised that the narrator was never turned back into a human? The same is true of Bruno Jenkins, who just cares about eating, whether he's a boy or a mouse. He still thinks and talks like our narrator, and has the same personality.
When our narrator is changed into a mouse, he is still the same boy on the inside. The thing is, with the physical transformation, there is no emotional or internal transformation of any kind. The witches like to change little boys and girls into other things: oil painting figures, chickens, slugs, porpoises, stone, and, of course, mice. Reimagining Roald Dahls beloved story for a modern audience, Robert Zemeckiss visually innovative THE WITCHES tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer. It's about actual physical transformation. That means that it's not about transforming something inside of you, changing yourself for the better, or any of that. It may not have stolen the original’s place in my heart but for my young daughter this was a thrilling introduction to Dahl’s world and a fun Halloween treat.Transformation in The Witches is a very literal theme. But The Witches 2020 casts a spell that is hard to entirely resist, primarily because everyone on screen seems to be having such a good time. It’s not hard to imagine that Dahl would have hated this saccharine retelling. Worst of all are the CGI mice which have a plasticky, weightless quality that would normally be reserved for a far lower budget film than this (though the voice performances are adorable). Elsewhere, Stanley Tucci’s role is so thankless as to suggest he’s doing someone a favour, while Chris Rock’s shouty narration distracts more than it enhances. Her appearance is comically crap a wide mouth that looks like a Snapchat filter and feet with a long, single middle toe that seems to be perpetually flipping the bird. Try as she might, however, hers is not a Grand High Witch for the ages. Even when tasked with dire villainous monologues like, “You think you are so clever breaking into my room with a stolen key when everyone knows they keep a spare key at the front desk,” she rolls her Rs and furrows her brow with such aplomb it’s hard not be impressed. She gives it her absolute all, chewing the scenery with a vague trans-European accent that often changes mid-sentence. The styling for her character is worth the rental price alone her bright floral prints, stiff hair and plethora of accessories seem to be coordinated to match the furniture and wallpaper of every room she enters.Īnne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch is almost as successful. Here in the archives at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre we have the early manuscript drafts of his books, some of which contain fantastically creepy sections that were cut from later versions of the stories.

Octavia Spencer is wonderful as Grandma, transformed from a hard-living, chain-smoking Norwegian octogenarian to a God-fearing fiftysomething full of warmth and folksy wisdom. However, not all of Roald Dahl’s initial ideas made it into his finished books. This is an altogether more wholesome caper, and many new elements work well.
